Overcoming Public Speaking Nerves!
TRY TO RELAX
Im sure weve all experienced that tense, nervous feeling before any important occasion, be it, public speaking performance, job interview, that meeting with the boss or that big race or game.
As you pace around the house or the dressing room someone is sure to say - " For goodness sake relax ", but no-one ever tells you just how to do that, in the face of your pending ordeal of performing in public. It is easier said than done.
There is a way to at least alleviate the initial nervousness, that I have found very successful..... I think this method originally was suggested in a public speaking course by the British School of Yoga and it is such a simple principle and so very easy to do prior to any public performance......
You may be aware that all of us first begin to express ourselves using our hands. You will have observed the child who is yet unable to talk, making his feelings known by pointing and gesticulating with his hands.
The child talks with its hands before it learns to use its voice and this process of talking with the hands is carried over into adult life. If you start to make your own observations of people, then you will gain a better appreciation of this fact.
This habit of expressing ourselves first with our hands still affects most of us as adults. Immediately we become nervous or apprehensive about a situation, our hands begin to move and often become very tense or fidgety. They are actually expressing the fact that - "We feel nervous".
You see when you are nervous your hands begin a series of movements that indicate your nervousness even before you can put it into words. So it is of great benefit to those of us involved in public performance, or even having to face the boss or an important interview, to bear this in mind and to try to acquire the habit of relaxing the hands.
When you allow the hands to relax completely, then you will be far less aware of any nervousness. Your mind calms down and a lot of the fear diminishes.
Unfortunately, as most of you will have experienced, the harder you try to control nervousness, - the more nervous you become. This is because your mind is concentrating on that nervous feeling. If you concentrate on relaxing your hands, right down to the fingertips, you will actually experience the nervousness flowing out from the tips of your fingers.
You will find that you are calmer and have more control of your feelings, as you relax your hands. Your heart will almost certainly be beating faster with the anxiety of being called upon to perform, but it will not trouble you the same if you concentrate on relaxing your hands, rather than trying to stop your heart racing. That's a lot more difficult. (You can help that by deep breathing, which we will come to next).
Another factor to bear in mind is that when the hands relax the mind calms down and so any nervousness that you may have when you begin to speak will not affect your voice or be apparent in your speech.
The advantage of this is that nobody in the audience can detect that you are nervous. The audience cannot see your heart beating faster, they cannot detect any nervousness in your voice, and so you can stop worrying about these aspects and simply concentrate on relaxing, breathing and delivering your performance.
